Kat Lock embarks on a new chapter with debut EP

Kat Lock is making a name for herself in the Oklahoma music scene with her heart-shaped sunglasses, leopard print aesthetic, and affinity for meme culture. After training classically in Broadway and Opera, Lock learned how to play “Hey Ya” by OutKast on guitar, played with indie band St. Basic for 2 years, and then started her solo career with the release of her first single “Hard to Find.” Now, she’s releasing her first EP – “You Again.”

The new EP drops tomorrow (July 12), and you can celebrate the release at Kat Lock’s show July 12 at 89th Street Collective in OKC with musical guests Matt Jewett, One Two Ten, and Caleb Alvin James. Lock’s band includes bassist Matt Ellis, guitarists Matt Swann, and drummer Ethan Neel.

Lock recorded with the amazing Brine Webb from Lunar Manor recordings (which you can read more about below).

How does Lock describe her musical career? In her OkSessions feature, she said,  “it started more as a meme than anything.” But all jokes aside, Lock’s new music is daring and sentimental, writing about things she’s never written before. Kat Lock is the perfect answer for fans of Rilo Kiley, indie rock, girl power, and Real Housewives of New York.

So what’s the new EP like?

Caity Robb of Starcatcher Magazine said it’s the hit of the summer and called it “powerfully emotional and a light listen.” Robb wrote, “there’s no flurry of instruments to back her up – just melodies that perfectly complement the strong vocals of Lock.”

Lock said the EP is all about recognizing faults and attempts at self growth complemented by hints of relationship drama and self-exploration. To read a rundown on each of the songs, check out the full article from Starcatcher!

Lock did an interview with Jeremy Martin from the Oklahoma Gazette and said her new music is more vulnerable, songs she wrote for herself just to process her emotions. At first, she didn’t even intend on releasing them.

“They were kind of secret songs,” Lock told Martin. “I mean, you could ask any of my friends and they’ll tell you who they’re about. … They’re like, ‘This one’s about this person, right?’ and I’m like, ‘Shut up.’ But I just decided I didn’t care if people knew. I probably became more confident through St. Basic, and now I don’t really care if people know they’re about someone. Who cares?”

Martin and Lock also discussed how much she’s changed in her songwriting since fronting St. Basic, how much her musicality has matured.

With a fresh image, incredible backing band, stellar recording team, and a loyal following, Kat Lock is embarking on a new journey into her musical career. To be part of that journey, check out her show at 89th St. this friday, and make sure to check out her new EP when it drops (also on Friday).

Oh and P.S. stay tuned for a review of the EP this weekend from an OkSessions guest-writer and local music enthusiast.
